In the early development stages, the film was drastically different. Exclusive storyboards from the DreamWorks archives reveal that the original plot focused much more heavily on a political activist group trying to "liberate" the animals.

The movie follows the adventures of four animal friends: Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (voiced by Chris Rock), Gloria the hippo (voiced by Jada Pinkett Smith), and Melman the giraffe (voiced by David Schwimmer), who live in the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
