We eventually learn the source of her trauma: years earlier, Cassie was a promising medical student, but her best friend, Nina, was raped at a party by a fellow student, Al Monroe. When Cassie and Nina reported the assault, they were failed at every turn—by their classmates, by the university administration, and by the legal system.
