In the late 1990s, the Microsoft-powered MPEG-4 codec was hacked and turned into the proprietary DivX codec. This angered the open-source community, which responded by reverse-engineering the code. The result was —"DivX" spelled backward. This free and open-source library for compressing video according to the MPEG-4 Part 2 standard was revolutionary.
