is set in 1956 in northern France. The plot follows a destitute Moroccan immigrant named Amir (played by Amir El Kacem) who is desperate for work and money. He joins a group of hardened coal miners led by the stern foreman Roland (Samuel Le Bihan). Their mission, orchestrated by the mysterious Professor Berthier (Jean-Hugues Anglade), is to escort the scientist deep into a long-abandoned coal mine to take soil samples.
