Suddenly, the doors slam shut behind them, and the gang hears the sound of scraping and scuttling coming from the walls. Lagoona uses her sea monster powers to sense the vibrations in the air, and discovers that they're not alone in the mausoleum. A group of ghostly spirits, trapped between worlds, begin to materialize around them.

The story begins at Monster High, where the school spirit is high for the championship game of SKRM (Skultimate Roller Maze). The reigning champions, the Monster High boys' team—led by captain Heath Burns—are confident of victory against their arch-rivals, Gloom Beach. However, the opposing team plays dirty, utilizing an item known as the "Gloom Beach Sandman" to put the Monster High team into a deep sleep. Monster High loses the championship, and with it, the spirit of the school plummets.
