Before 2014, deep canopy jungle search and rescue operations relied almost exclusively on rotary aircraft (helicopters). Helicopters offered the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities needed to hoist survivors out of dense trees. However, they suffered from major operational limitations: short flight ranges, low fuel efficiency, and lack of radar coverage under triple-canopy foliage.
