On January 11, 1894, two young Baptist missionaries, Rev. J.H. Lorrain (known to the Mizos as Pu Buanga) and Rev. F.W. Savidge, arrived at a place called Sairang. They are celebrated as the pioneers who brought Christianity to the Mizo hills. Their work in creating a written grammar for the Mizo language and translating the Bible was foundational, but equally important was their introduction of congregational singing.
While the 1899 collection relied entirely on Western tunes and translated lyrics, it did not take long for native believers to find their own creative voice. Early Western melodies were often rigid and foreign to Mizo ears, which preferred rhythmic, expressive cadences.
