On the surface, Mona is the standard ojou-sama rival character. She is arrogant, vain, and dramatic. However, the manga skillfully peels back her layers.
What Mona does not know is that Medaka is actually an aspiring Buddhist monk training at his family's temple. He is bound by strict vows to resist carnal desires and modern temptations. Medaka finds Mona incredibly attractive, but he must use every ounce of his mental strength and spiritual training to maintain a poker face. Key Characters Mona Kawai
The panels emphasize micro-expressions, flushing cheeks, and subtle body language, which heightens the romantic tension of the "close calls" between Medaka and the female cast. Reception and Impact
Medaka is a stoic, bespectacled transfer student who also happens to be a monk in training. Because of his religious upbringing and monk vows, he is completely immune to Mona's considerable charms. While every other boy in school falls at her feet, Medaka barely acknowledges her existence, treating her with polite indifference or scolding her for being too flashy.
Ongoing. As of late 2024/early 2025, the series has surpassed 100 chapters, with no signs of ending. The manga recently celebrated a major character development arc that saw Kuroiwa openly admit (to himself, at least) that Mona is "dangerous" to his vows—a massive step.
