The book has undergone multiple revisions, with the being the most recent major update. This version includes incorporated materials intended to reflect the author's later wishes and updated historical contexts, such as the EDSA Revolution.

Recognizing that history is a living, changing discipline, the book has been continuously updated. History of the Filipino People has gone through eight editions, with publication dates ranging from 1960 to as late as 2012. The eighth edition, in particular, was updated at the request of the Agoncillo family, "a fulfillment of the wish of the late Professor Teodoro A. Agoncillo who had indicated on various occasions ... the need to update the text in response to changing situations". This edition replaced chapters written by a co-author with new materials that Agoncillo himself had planned to incorporate.
